Maximus vampire - UPDATE
April 10th, 2010
In previous review of the the Vampire:
Maximus 360 Xtractor addon - Vampire - March 19th, 2010, by BraveH43
He had issues reading a Lite_On with Winbond SPI. It very quickly became apparent that this did not tie in with the majority of user experience.
So in an effort to avoid any mud slinging. I acquired 360Xtractor and Vampire from XtractorUK.com.
I started tests with a known MXIC drive to set a baseline, it work flawlessly:
- Inquiry
- Intro
- DevID
- Read
- Write
- Outro
- Inquiry
Moving along swiftly, I hooked up my known Winbond drive. At first, It wouldn't intro, full power off, wait 10 seconds let all caps discharge, powered on:
- Intro
- DevID
- Read
BUT write failes. :(
Following discussions with Maximus himself this is actually the accepted situation and an RTFM would have verified this, My Bad :(
The Vampire does not supply power on Pin 101 when the MRA hack is off i.e. when the button is released. In the case of Winbond it requires more power than the MXIC SPI and will comfortably perform mosts task but won't write. In the official Maximus guide YOU are instructed that once you have read the f/w, you must rebuild the cut traces and then use Lite-On Erase in order to write.
But of course at JF we strive for excellence and try to get is all done in one sitting, why wait...
SOOO.....
We can confirm that Lite-On's with Winbond SPI's are fully readable with Vampire from Maximus.
We are still unsure why BraveH43's drive was so awkward as it does read with other products. Further investigation is necessary. But like back in the Hitachi days, there is always one damn drive that won't work no matter what ya do.
